BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Was it a case of mistaken identity or not?

“We received a complaint, we answered the call, we spotted the vehicle, we initiated a traffic stop, he identified himself as a law enforcement officer, which he was not.” –Calera Police

Popular youth evangelist, Matt Pitt, was arrested by Calera Police. They say he was intentionally passing himself off as a peace officer.

“When we made the traffic stop, he did display a badge, he pulled a badge out, he showed it to the officers, he made the statement that he was a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.”  –Calera Police

Calera Police pulled Pitt over after a driver complained of an incident involving unmarked police car. The driver thought they were being pulled over when the blue lights flashed. Instead off pulling over behind them, the car sped off. “It had multiple lights, blue lights, flashing led blue lights, all over. As well as a siren like an actual police siren.” Owning emergency equipment is not against the law, but setting them off on public roads is.

“This is a crime in the state of Alabama, and it’s a crime in most states if not all states.” Matt Pitt was bonded out of the Shelby County Jail $10,000 on Saturday.

At this time, Calera police are not saying who the vehicle, Pitt was driving, is registered to. The case remains under investigation.
