Jefferson County Sheriffs Office issues “Scam Alert”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — On Thursday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert.The alert was issued for a man who claims to be a chaplain with the sheriff’s office.According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the man is going to businesses and claiming that he has run out of gas in his vehicle while on a way to see a family member in the hospital or in jail.

The man also claims that he is in a rush to get out of the door and that he left his wallet at home.

“It’s a trust thing,” Chief Deputy Randy Christian said on Thursday. “He’s trying to gain your trust, and then he’s relying on you being good-hearted enough to help him out.”
