(WIAT) – A Walker County Jail death case at the center of a CBS42 news investigation, has the attention of a human rights group out of Atlanta.
Gerald Rose represents New Order National Human R. He says, “It doesn’t matter what you’re accused of, a suspect in, no one should be treated like an animal.”
Rose says he is concerned and upset, by what he’s learned about the death of 21 year old Vincent Rowell.
It’s going on all across America. I’m going to Ohio next weekend to address the same kind of issue. We need to mobilize, it’s not just a black issue, it’s a human rights issue.
Rowell was found dead in his jail cell in October of 2009. The family claims rowell was beaten after a police chase, then left to die, despite begging for help over a six day period.
Vincent Rowell’s mother Linda Rowell says, “He knew he was going to die, you didn’t let him talk to his mom, his dad, you didn’t let him get a phone call. I will not stop at nothing until they’re all in jail.”
The Walker County Jail will be the focus of rallies the group says it plans to organize in Jasper.
Linda Rowell says she hopes this renewed spotlight on her son’s case will finally get the answers to how and why her son died.
The FBI confirmed to CBS42 News, it is investigating Vincent Rowell’s death and whether his civil rights were violated.
Those findings will be turned over to the justice department.
The family has also filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit.
Several agencies and officials including Sheriff John Mark Tirey are named.
Their attorneys declined to answer any of our questions about the case, during our news investigation.
We spent a month looking into the details of how Vincent Rowell died.
