HOOVER, Ala. — The Samford University women’s golf team carded a two-round score of 617 (308-309) Monday to lead wire-to-wire on the opening day of play at the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate being held at Hoover Country Club.
The Bulldogs built a three-stroke advantage over the 10-team field Monday as Lamar (316-304=620), Jacksonville State (316-308=624), West Florida (323-303=626) and Louisiana-Monroe (309-318=627) round out the top five.
The 54-hole competition will continue Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. (CDT). Hoover Country Club is a highly-acclaimed 6,271-yard, par-72 golf course.
The field of this week’s 2013 Samford Intercollegiate consists of Samford (host), Alabama State, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Lamar, Louisiana‐Monroe, Tennessee Tech, UAB, University of Mobile, University of New Orleans (UNO) and West Florida.
Individually, the Bulldogs’ Bailey Gray sits in third place with a 36-hole score of 150 (75-75). Samford’s talented sophomore from Trussville only trails first-place Elin Olsson (75-71=146) of West Florida by four strokes. In second place at the conclusion of Monday’s competition is Louisiana-Monroe’s Alison Knowles, who has posted a two-round tally of 148 (72-76).
All six Bulldogs played well on their home course Monday. The entire Samford starting lineup was ranked among the top-20 in the individual standings and senior Kayla Turner, who is competing as an individual, finished 36 holes in 21st place. Turner, the Bulldogs’ native of Clarksville, Tenn., posted a two-round score of 161 (82-79).
Samford’s starting lineup consisted of Gray (third place), senior Anna Heim (ninth place) and sophomore Emily Stallings (13th place), as well as juniors Natalie Mitchell (15th place) and Alex Jasper (20th place).
The Bulldogs’ Heim carded a 36-hole score of 155 (74-81) on Monday, while Stallings followed with a 157 (80-77) and Mitchell notched a 158 (82-76). Samford’s Jasper rounded out the team’s scoring with a two-round total of 160 (79-81).
The 2013 Samford Intercollegiate will resume Tuesday with the final 18 holes of play beginning at 8:15 a.m. (CDT) at the Hoover Country Club.
