(WIAT) — Fourth and Fifth graders from throughout the Birmingham area competed in the “Academic Bowl at the Southern Museum of Flight on Wednesday.
The event focused on government and geography.
School leaders believe the two subjects are vital for the students to learn.
“We want our kids to continue to become productive members of society and bring the knowledge and expertise that they learn from civics and social studies to be able to function in their communities,” Dr. Ina-Mae Sher of Birmingham City Schools said on Wednesday.
Students who win the event advance to compete in the Academic Bowl finals at the McWane Science Center on May 2, 2013.
