Gadsden man charged in massive illegal online sports gambling case

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (WIAT) — According to a United States Department of Justice release on Wednesday, a Gadsden man is among 57 people charged with operating an illegal online sports gaming business.

Gregory Wilson “Patchman” Roberts, 54, was indicted along with a host of other members believed to be involved in a massive online gambling ring.

In total, thirty-four individuals and 23 entities were charged in the case.

The release states that the defendants “are alleged to have been employees, members and associates of the ongoing Legendz Sports enterprise.”

Legendz Sports allegedly used the 23 entities to facilitate gambling, own websites and domain names, launder funds generated by gambling, make payouts to gamblers as well as to operate payment processors.

The official indictment alleges Legendz Sports of soliciting millions of illegal bets totaling over $1 billion.

If convicted, defendants face:

  • Up to 20 years in prison for racketeering
  • Up to 20 years in prison for conspiring to commit money laundering
  • Up to 10 years in prison for money laundering
  • Up to 5 years in prison for operating an illegal gambling business

The indictment also wants at least $1 billion in forfeiture money “traceable to numerous specific assets that include real estate, bank accounts, brokerage and investment accounts, certificates of deposit, IRA, domain names, a Sabreleiner aircraft, a gas lease and vehicles.”

“Individuals cannot skirt the laws of the United States by setting up illegal internet gambling operations in a foreign country, while living in the United States and enjoying all the benefits of U.S. citizens,” Jim Finch, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office, said on Wednesday.

The statement released by the Department of Justice states that the indictment is only an accusation. The defendants are to be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
