(WIAT) – Foreclosures are still a huge problem here in Alabama for homeowners. Neighborhood Housing Services of Birmingham, a local non-profit, wants to help head off more families losing their homes.

A special free event is set for Thursday and Friday to help those struggling with their mortgages. It is from 12pm to 8pm both days at the Birmingham Crossplex at 2331 Bessemer Road.

You need to bring copies of several financial documents with you: utility bills, closing documents, bank statements, most recent W2, 2012 tax return and proof of income. (pay stubs, SSI/Disability, Retirement, etc.)

Counselors will be on hand to help you get a mortgage payment you can afford before it’s too late. “A lot of times we can get a loan modification with a lender or get a principal reduction that will reduce your mortgage payments significantly,” says Amber Courtney with Neighborhood Housing.
