New MRI technology expected to be available within ten years

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a useful tool that allows doctors to scan virtually every organ in the body.

The first MRI was performed on a human in 1977. It took nearly five hours to produce just one image.

Now, there’s a new type of MRI technology.

A new MRI allows doctors to see images on a nanoscale, a machine used to examine a strand of DNA or a person’s individual molecules.

“[With] that kind of limit, you can’t reach, you can’t even think of reaching with standard technology, standard MRI technology,” said Carlos Meriles, a professor of physics at the City College of New York said.

The nanoscale MRI would not replace current MRIs, but it would be used to collect different kinds of data.

The new nanoscale MRI technology is expected to be available in ten years.
