Birmingham, AL (WIAT)—The Samford baseball team plated five runs in the first inning on its way to a 7-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford pitcher Alex Milazzo (6-0) pitched 6.0 strong innings, giving up no runs on four hits, and tying a season high with seven strikeouts, to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Milazzo allowed just one walk in the win. Parker Curry and Patrick Maronde combined to pitch the final 3.0 innings for the Bulldogs.

“He attacked the strike zone well,” Samford head coach Casey Dunn said of Milazzo. “I think his only walk was to their lead-off hitter of the game. Other than that, he was able to get strike one and take advantage of it. I thought he did a good job of getting ahead of their guys and getting that first strike.”

At the plate, Samford was led by Christiaan Durdaller, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. C.K. Irby, Caleb Bryson, Tommy Corbin and Damon Waller had one RBI each.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Jaron Gold (2-6) gave up five runs, just two earned, on three hits without recording an out, to take the loss on the mound for the Golden Lions. Mike Wieland went 2-for-3 at the plate for UAPB, while Jacob Whitney drove in the Golden Lions’ lone run of the game, going 1-for-1.

Samford plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Zeth Stone singled to lead off the inning and then moved to second base when Austin Allison reached base on a UAPB error. After moving to third base on a wild pitch, Stone scored the game’s first run on a single by Irby. Phillip Ervin then walked to load the bases. Durdaller then doubled to center field to drive in Irby and Allison for a 3-0 Samford lead. With one out in the first inning, Corbin reached base on another UAPB error, and Ervin and Durdaller both scored on the play to make the score 5-0.

The score remained 5-0 until Samford struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Durdaller doubled to lead off the inning. Bryson then singled to right field to drive run Durdaller to make the score 6-0. With one out, Richard Greene singled to center field, moving Bryson to third base. Waller then doubled down the left-field line to drive in Bryson for a 7-0 Samford lead.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff plated its lone run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs in the inning, Wieland was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Isias Alcantar then walked. Whitney then singled to center field to drive in Wieland to make the final score 7-1.

With the win, Samford improves to 20-19 on the season. Arkansas-Pine Bluff drops to 14-23 with the loss.
