(WIAT) — The issue of elder abuse was front and center at a press conference held at the Alabaster Senior Center on Monday.
State Sen. Cam Ward is sponsoring legislation that would increase penalties for elder abuse.
The legislation would also make it easier to prosecute the cases.
Senator Ward says criminal treatment of senior citizens goes beyond physical abuse, but includes numerous senior citizens who are swindled out of their life’s savings.
“Every day in [Alabama] there are instances of abuse,” Senator Ward said.
Ward encouraged the seniors who attended the press conference to call legislators to make sure the bill does not get lost in the shuffles as the sessions winds down.
Only one more vote is needed to pass the legislation which would better define financial exploitation and give prosecutors additional tools in cases of physical abuse or neglect.
