CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait (WIAT) – Auburn fans gathered on Saturday to watch the Tigers culminate spring football with the annual A-Day game. The fans then traveled to Toomer’s Corner to drape the Toomer’s Oaks one final time.
But some Auburn fans simply could not make the trip to the game to participate in the traditional rolling of the oaks.
Auburn fans stationed with the Alabama Army National Guard’s 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, currently stationed in Kuwait, celebrated from across the ocean by rolling a T-55 tank at a major intersection of their camp, Camp Arifjan.
“I was feeling homesick,” said Lt. Col. Steven Shepherd, of Homewood, Ala. “All of my friends and family were talking about going to Toomer’s Corner on Facebook. I wanted to be there.”
When it was all said and done, 25 soldiers rolled the tank and shouted “War Eagle!” in the process.
The famed oaks will be removed on Tuesday in Auburn.
