BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The Birmingham City Council wants nothing to do with a bill that would change the Water Works board.
Counselors voted unanimously Tuesday to oppose House Bill 647. The measure would add four seats to the water board. City counselors say the bill tampers with a board that already runs smoothly. On top of that, counselors say they were not consulted about the legislation
“We would not even be having this discussion if it were in Shelby County, Mountain Brook or any other municipality outside of Birmingham,“ Counselor Stephen Hoyt said.
Senator Jabo Waggoner sponsored the bill. He says it would increase accountability and transparency. Counselors plan to meet with him Wednesday.
