Diagnostic mistakes among most common medical errors

(WIAT) — Researchers looking into malpractice payouts have found that diagnostic mistakes are more common, more costly and more harmful than other kinds of medical mistakes.

Diagnostic mistakes are considered diagnoses that are missed, are wrong or were not caught in time.

Johns Hopkins researchers estimate up to 160,000 patients each year suffer from permanent injuries or death because of diagnostic errors.
