(WIAT) — 36 million adults in the United States report some degree of hearing loss, but only one in five people who can benefit from using a hearing aid actually use one.

Now, there is a new oral device that will help many people hear much better.

The  SoundBite Hearing System is recommended for people with hearing loss in one ear.

It functions by utilizing a wireless microphone that is placed inside the bad ear.

The microphone captures sound waves that are sent to another device attached to the patient’s tooth.

Vibrations travel through the skull bones and are picked up by the inner part of the good ear.

“As long as the hearing in the good ear is normal, patients with bilateral or hearing loss in both ears are not good candidates,” audiologist Susan M. Kellerher said. “It just hooks over your ear.”

The only downsides to the device are occasional feedback and making sure the batteries are properly charged.
