PELHAM, AL (WIAT) – The 5th ranked Pelham Panthers (6A) are getting ready for a three-game 2nd round playoff series vs. Spain Park in high school baseball. Sean Anderson and his Panthers swept Prattville in round one, while the Jaguars upset top-ranked Thompson to advance to round two. There is a playoff history between these two teams. Spain Park beat Pelham in a three-game series last year in the AHSAA 3rd Round, while the Panthers got past the Jags in the 2nd Round of the 2010 playoffs.

The Panthers players downplayed the possibility of revenge against Spain Park. “We really try not to look at that. I mean, it’s a whole lot of guys graduated for them, a lot of guys graduated for us,” said center fielder Fletcher Johnson. Game one’s starting pitcher, Pelham’s Thomas Lowery, acknowledged the rivalry between the teams, “They’re an area opponent, big time rival. I mean every time we play them it’s a great game, so really we’re just going to do what we do.”

The teams begin their 2nd round playoff series Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm at Pelham High School. The second game will follow. If necessary the teams will play a third and deciding game on Saturday at 11 am.
