(WIAT) – A recent survey by Visa finds people who live in Southern states are dropping big bucks on prom.
Visa says U.S. families with teenagers will spend an average of $1,139 each on prom. According to the survey, in Alabama parents and teens spend an average of $1,203 for the big night.
The company’s study also broke down prom spending by region, with those in the Midwest spending the least with an average of $722. Those out East, an average of $1,528 and Western families will spend $1,079.
With everything from limo rentals to tuxedos and dining out on the list of expenses, Collage Consignment owner Tracy True Dismukes says these days the bulk of prom expenses are spent on prom dresses.
She sees many parents in consignment shop looking for the best deal.
“They start on the first weekend of January. We see the mothers and the daughters coming through looking for prom and pageant gowns and it lasts for 4 solid months and that tells us there’s a lot of people who want a better deal, cause they’re so expensive, these gowns are so expensive,” said Dismukes.
One was to get money back after prom sell dresses in good condition. According to Dismukes, consignment shops often look to by them around December, just before the start of prom season.
The dresses can be donated.
