BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — According to a release by the Birmingham Police Department, detectives have identified a suspect surrounding a homicide investigation.
The incident occurred at Railroad Park on Sunday, March 17, 2013.
Officers from the North Precinct of the Birmingham Police Department responded to a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they located the victim, 15-year-old Jermaine Walton, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue officials arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:45 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2013.
The suspect has been identified as 17-year-old Justin Jones of Birmingham.
“This investigation required the patience of the community, detectives, and media in order to help bring closure to this case for Jermaine’s family,” Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said on Tuesday. “This crime occurring at Railroad Park is not indicative of the daily example of the thousands of citizens and visitors that spend time enjoying the venue. We will continue to be vigilant in our crime fighting efforts to keep the citizens and visitors of Birmingham safe.”
A Murder warrant has been obtained for Jones, and he was taken into custody at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
Birmingham Police believe Jones to be the only shooter.
