(WIAT) – Parents in the Gate City community say they have serious concerns about crime. Several say they do not allow their kids to play outside anymore because of shootings.
There is also the case of 4-year–old Deonte Mixon. He was fleeing a shooting when killed by a hit and run driver. The July 2012 case remains unsolved.
“I hope the violence stops. They got to realize, they got to wake up. I thought they were going to wake up when that little boy died,“ parent Andre Richmond said.
“You can’t let them walk to the school bus alone because you don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s sad,“ parent Victoria Defreese said.
Police say they increased patrol in the area following the hit and run.
