Operation Lifesaver hands out safe railroad crossing tips at Amtrak station

(WIAT) — If you have never crossed railroad tracks when the arms are extended, you have probably witnessed someone else do it.

It is a dangerous decision, and it’s also one that could be costly.

Organizers with Operation Lifesaver are hoping to get that message across.

In honor of International Level Cross Day, representatives from the organization handed out rail safety information at the Birminghan Amtrak Station on Tuesday.

Organizers say the tips inside the information they handed out could save a life.

Alabama is ranked sixth in the nation in number of accidents involving trains and cars.
