Birmingham teacher named Alabama Teacher of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: According to a release from the State of Alabama Department of Education, Dr. Alison Grizzle has been named the Alabama 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.

Grizzle, a math teacher at P.D. Jackson-Olin High School, received the honor at an awards ceremony on Wednesday evening.

In addition to being named Teacher of the Year, Grizzle was chosen to serve as the official spokesperson and representative for Alabama teachers during the next year.

Tracy Pruitt, a teacher in Dothan at Montana  Street Academic Magnet School, was named the Alternate Teacher of the Year.

ORIGINAL: Wednesday night is a big occasion for three Birmingham-area teachers.

The teachers are all finalists for the Alabama Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year award.

The teachers hoping to take home the title are Kathy Perkins , of Verner Elementary School in Tuscaloosa, Tracy Pruit of Montana Street Academic Magnet School in Dothan, Alison Grizzle, a math teacher at Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham and Jeff Johnson, head of the science department at Hoover High School.

The winner is set to be announced at a ceremony on Wednesday evening, around 6 p.m.
