(WIAT) — 50 years ago, seniors in Birmingham City Schools were denied what is, for many, a rite of passage – prom.

School leaders cancelled the event after the students were involved in a massive, non-violent demonstration.

Now, they are planning that prom they never had.

On Thursday, organizers with the 1963 Historical Prom held a Ticket-a-Thon at Boutwell Auditorium.

They are hoping at least 300 people will attend the big dance.

The prom will be held at the Boutwell Auditorium on May 17, 2013.

Tickets for the prom are on sale at the auditorium.

On Friday, tickets are available for $19.63, but after that the prices will increase to $25.63.

Tickets will be $30.63 at the door.
