(WIAT) — Thursday was a beautiful day to spend some time outdoors.

In fact, that’s what some Birmingham-area students had the opportunity to do.

The 19th annual Exceptional Anglers event, called “Gone Fishin’, Not Just Wishin’”, was held at the Oak Mountain State Park on Thursday.

Special needs students from Jefferson and Shelby counties participated in the event.

The event provided the students with a chance to fish and have some fun.

“[The event] is a chance for everybody to slow down and enjoy themselves and have a unique adventure,” Doug Carr said. “It also tells them, hey, this is a sport that they can participate in.”

The students range from 5 to 21 years old.
