UAB tops Southern Miss in opening round of CUSA Softball Tournament

Tulsa, OK (WIAT)-Top-seeded UAB softball team dropped No. 8 Southern Miss, 3-2, in 10 innings on Thursday to win the opening round of the Conference USA Championship.

With the bases loaded, Armstrong fielded a bunt in front of the circle, and Orr scored the game-winning run.

“We were definitely struggling to manufacture runs,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “So when we had the opportunity with a runner on third, I really thought the bunt would get us across the plate. In games like this you just have to throw everything out, you just have to figure out what the easiest way to score is, and that was it.”

With the bases loaded in the 10th inning, senior Kate Armstrong fielded a game-ending RBI bunt single to give UAB the victory.

The Blazers improves to 37-15 on the season and advance to the semifinals to play 4th seeded Marshall or 5th seeded East Carolina.

The game is scheduled for 4:30p.m on Friday.
