HOUSTON, TX (WIAT) – The UAB Blazers baseball team outhit the Houston Cougars, but mistakes in the field became their undoing in a 9-4 loss in Sunday’s series finale. Six errors and a six-run third inning by the Cougars led UAB to another conference loss.
That drops the Blazers to 19-33 overall and 5-16 in C-USA.
“We had a lot of chances. It is really hard to overcome a six-run inning,” head coach Brian Shoop said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever won a game when our team made six infield errors. That combination of six errors and them pushing across six in one inning was a really tough thing to overcome in the new bat era.”
UAB struck first in the opening inning by taking advantage of a Houston error. Ivan De Jesus came home when the Cougars committed an infield error. Houston didn’t let that shake them, scoring twice in the bottom half of the first inning.
The Blazers are back in action Tuesday at home against Troy at 6:30 pm. They will close out the conference schedule with a three-game series beginning Thursday at Tulane.
