(WIAT) — Residents in south Alabama have a very smelly problem on their hands – dead fish washing ashore.
Mobile Bay neighbors say redfish and catfish have been popping up in droves along the shore over the past few days.
It is apparently not the first time this has happened.
Residents in the area say they had a similar problem around the same time in 2012.
This year, though, the number of carcasses has doubled. Unfortunately, so has the smell.
Researchers at nearby universities are blaming the problem on a virus.
