Three teens to face additional charges when trial for capital murder begins

(WIAT) — Three teens charged in the January 2012 murders of five Ensley men will face new charges when they go on trial for capital murder.

Ashad Stoves, Artavius Underwood and Reginald Mims will also be tried on robbery charges.

The Jefferson County District Attorney says that during the robbery, just two hours before the shootings, the three men stole a pistol and a small amount of drugs.

Shell casings matching bullets belonging to the robbery victims were found at the homicide scene.

On Monday, Judge Stephen Wallace granted a motion to combine the robbery and capital murder charges, but he denied a motion to set bond.

Members of the victims’ families did not comment about what happened on Monday, but they did pack the Jefferson County courtroom in search of justice.

19-year old Demetrius Sanford, 23-year-old Jefferey Davis Jr., 42-year-old Ronnie James Render, 21-year-old Charles Render and 23-year-old Jonathan Sanchez lost their in the quintuple homicide on January 29, 2012.

According to police records and other testimonies, four of the five victims were found in the back room of a home in Ensley stripped of their clothes and shot to death.

A fifth victim was found in the front room of the house, fully clothed and shot in the head.

The next court appearance will be in six weeks.
