TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – On Tuesday, officials from the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference announced plans for an interconference basketball event, the Big 12/SEC Challenge, that will begin during the 2013-2014 season.

The Alabama men’s basketball team will take on Texas Tech at Coleman Coliseum on Thursday, November 14 during the event’s inaugural game.

The Crimson Tide faced the Red Raiders last season, earning the 66-62 victory on the road in Lubbock, Texas.

“The ability to showcase SEC basketball in this kind of conference competition makes this a unique and exciting event for our coaches, student-athletes and fans,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said on Tuesday. “We are pleased to be able to work with the Big 12 and ESPN to highlight the sport of men’s basketball.”

The annual event will feature 10 Big 12 teams and 10 members of the SEC. Arkansas, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee are the only SEC schools that will not participate during the event’s first year.
