BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — About 40 Birmingham Police officers loaded up on a bus and hit the streets to interact with people in the Gate City community on Tuesday.
The interaction is a response to crime in that community, including the Marks Village Housing Project where police say a mother was killed in her doorway in April.
Sherri Williams was standing in the doorway of her home while holding her son when she was hit by a stray bullet on April 29, 2013.
After her death, the community called on the police department to be more active in the area.
The event is about making a positive impression on the people in the community, so that they will be more willing to share information with the police.
The effort involves officers and members of the command staff, including Chief A.C. Roper.
