LOUISVILLE, KY (WIAT) – UAB’s softball team continued their impressive season by beating one of the top teams in the Pac-12, UCLA (37-19) by a score of 6-3 in the opening game of the Louisville Regional. The Blazers (38-16) have now beaten two teams from the Pac-12 on the season. They opened the year by defeating Washington in Hawaii.
UAB now advances to Saturday’s winner’s bracket game against the host team Louisville at 1 pm CST. The Cardinals defeated IPFW 2-1 on Friday night.
“I told the girls that they can be that Cinderella team that advances to the Super Regionals and that everyone in the nation is talking about,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “They beat the game, and even when things weren’t going our way, we didn’t let it affect us mentally. We stayed focused throughout, and Lannah (Campbell) was phenomenal in the circle.”
Pitcher Lannah Campbell tossed a complete game, striking out seven and only allowing two earned runs. The Blazers broke the game open in the top of the third scoring six runs. Kristen McGrath hit a two-run single to clear the bases and give UAB a 4-2 lead. A Kayla Orr homer capped off the big inning, giving the Blazers a 6-2 lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish.
UAB then allowed just two more hits the rest of the game.
