UPDATE: Inmate that escaped on Friday captured, back at detention center

(WIAT) — UPDATE: According to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Justin Wade Hopkins was captured shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Friday evening in Gadsden.

He was captured by an Etowah County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force.

A citizen who saw Hopkins tipped off authorities, which eventually led to his arrest.

Hopkins is back in custody at the Etowah County Detention Center.

ORIGINAL: An inmate kitchen worker, who was being detained on theft and burglary charges, escaped from the Etowah County Detention Center on Friday morning and is on the run.

According to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Justin Wade Hopkins, a 30-year-old from Collinsville, Alabama, escaped from the detention center shortly after 4 a.m. on Friday.

Hopkins was reportedly last seen running towards Tuscaloosa Avenue.

He is described by the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office as a white male who is 6 feet tall and weighs around 220 pounds. Hopkins has brown eyes and brown hair, and his head is currently shaved.

At the time of his escape, Hopkins was wearing tan jail pants and a t-shirt.

The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who has seen Hopkins or may have information on his whereabouts to call (256) 546-2825.
