BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — New research suggests that handbags may be dirtier than the average toilet seat.
Researchers at Initial Hygiene say handbags, especially the handles, have up to ten times the level of microbiological activity on them than the average commode seat.
In a study, one in five handbag handles had enough bacteria on them to post a health risk.
However, it isn’t just the handles that are dirty.
Researchers also found plenty of germs, usually caused by makeup, inside the bags.
The cosmetic with the most bacteria turned out to be hand creams.
Initial Hygiene’s researchers suggest adding hand sanitizer to handbags, in addition to wiping down each bag with an antibacterial cloth every once in a while.
