(WIAT) — The 2013 Tour de Cure raised over $165,000 for diabetes treatment and research, but there was a major loss at the event as well.
Well-known cyclist Jerry Pope passed away during the ride on Saturday.
Pope lost his legs to diabetes, but he didn’t let that stop him from riding in the yearly tour.
He played golf, tennis and enjoyed water skiing.
Pope was on the return portion of the course when he had a heart attack.
Just weeks before the race, CBS42’s Chris Womack sat down with Pope for a profile story.
That story can be found by clicking this link.
