(WIAT) — A respiratory infection is making the rounds in parts of southeast Alabama.

The illness has caused seven people to be hospitalized, two of which have passed away.

Officials with the Alabama Department of Public Health have collected samples from all of the patients and are testing the samples at multiple laboratories to try to find a cause for the illness.

In the meantime, officials advise people who are experiencing fever, cough or shortness of breath to contact a health care provider.
