(WIAT) —  Nathaniel Gilmore Junior rides a MAX bus just about every day. He depends on public transportation to get from place to place.

“It gets me from A to B and sometimes C,” he said.

Gilmore is excited about changes that will soon get underway at the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority. The main building on Morris Avenue will be demolished. Two new structures will be built. One will go in the current location and the other across the street.

“People won’t come here looking for the train station, people won’t come here looking for Greyhound, everything will be right there,” Gilmore Jr. said.

MAX Bus, Greyhound and Amtrak will all be housed in the new $30 million intermodal facility.

“We are just glad to be able to partner with the City of Birmingham to be able to move forward with this project that’s been on the drawing board for what I understand is over ten years,” BJCTA Executive Director Ann Dawson-August said.

Construction of the current facility was partially funded with federal money 14 years ago. The City of Birmingham will pay $101,000 to the Federal Transportation Administration to buy out their ownership.

Some riders think other issues need to be addressed before the changes.

“They need to get better on getting the busses here and to their stops on time, because some people have jobs and important places to go,” bus rider Bashaundria Brown said.

Most of the cost will be paid for through a federal grant. The project gets underway this summer. During construction, a temporary facility will have to be located and utilized.
