(WIAT) — Physicians across the Alabama have been placed on alert after a mysterious illness killed two in southeast Alabama.

Seven other people have been hospitalized from the illness.

Officials with the Alabama Department of Health say they are still working to determine the source of the odd respiratory infection.

“While we are doing additional testing, we did have two more patients test positive for influenza,” Dr. Clair McIntyre with the Alabama Department of Health said on Wednesday.

The Alabama Department of Public Health says there is no obvious connection between the cases at this time, and they are not yet sure if the illness is contagious.

Health officials advise experiencing extreme flu-like symptoms to visit a health care provider.
