Shooting in Birmingham leaves one dead, one person in custody


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: The Birmingham Police Department has charged 28 year old Christopher Gunn of Birmingham in connection with this homicide.  A murder warrant with a $100,000 bond has been obtained against the suspect. Gunn is in custody at the Jefferson County Jail.

ORIGINAL: A neighborhood in Southwest Birmingham is in mourning after a young man was shot and killed just before noon on Thursday.

It happened on 17th Street S.W.

One man is in custody in relation to the shooting. Police believe the shooting began inside the home and then continued out onto the street.

Unique Anderson says she was on her way to visit the victim’s mother when stray bullets hit the side of her car. One puncture mark is visible near the right rear tire.

“I just heard some shots and took off. And stepped on it,” Anderson says. “It’s just a tragedy.”

Anderson identifies the victim as 20-year-old Carlos Mims.

“Every time you see him, he had a hug for you,” she says. “A smile. He was so handsome, he could have been a model.”
