Florida Edges UAB in Game One of Super Regional

Florida celebrates a win over UAB

GAINESVILLE, FL (WIAT) – UAB’s softball team had the No.2 seed Florida Gators right where they wanted them heading to the 7th inning in Game One of the Gainesville Regional on Saturday. The Blazers (40-18) led 3-2, only needing three outs to take an improbable 1-0 series lead over the heavily favored Gators (56-7).

But Florida showed why they’ve won 20 come from behind games this season. UAB pitcher Leigh Streetman loaded the bases with no one out. Florida’s Brianna Little was hit by a pitch, which brought home the tying run. Katie Medina then delivered a one-out base hit to win the game for the Gators, 4-3.

“That’s not what we came here for,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “We did not come here for some moral victory; we came here to win a ballgame. I felt like we played our hearts out and Florida won the freebie war. There’s lots of film to be watched and then we’ll get right back at it. We probably chose the hard way, but now our deal is to come out here and play two games tomorrow.

Sunday’s game two is set for a 11:04 CT first pitch and will be televised on ESPN. UAB must win the first game in order to force a “if necessary” game, which would follow game one.

Leigh Streetman (13-8) took the loss for UAB, throwing 1.1 innings and striking out three Gator batters. Lannah Campbell struck out eight batters through five innings before getting into trouble in the 5th.
