(WIAT) — Cordova’s police chief is squelching rumors of drug use.

Police Chief Nick Smith voluntarily took a drug test last week and the results came back clean.

Smith says Mayor Drew Gilbert mentioned over the weekend that there had been rumors that he was using drugs.

The mayor did not mention a specific source.

Smith says he was not surprised that after eight years on the force and 600 drug-related arrests that rumors have been created.

He was appointed as Cordova’s police chief in November.
