TUSCALOOSA,Ala (WIAT) Phillip Ely watched from the sidelines in the Georgia dome last December, watching two of his teammates battle it out in what was arguably the greatest game in 2012.

His at the time teammate AJ Mccarron, and his former teammate from Plant High school in Tampa, Georgia QB Aaron Murray.

Following Murrays departure to the Georgia Bulldogs, Ely provided Plant with a state championship season of his own, throwing for over 4,500 yards and 46 touchdowns in 2011, earning himself a Scholarship to the National Champions in Tuscaloosa.

Now, Ely is choosing to go his own route, in lieu of following up McCarron.

The Tweet supplemented by a Memo from Robert Weiner, Ely’s former HS coach

“Hello everyone. I would like you to know that former Plant quarterback Phillip Ely will transfer from the University of Alabama to the University of Toledo. Phillip just completed his redshirt freshman year and is 6’1″ 215 pounds and has had an amazing football run in the last five years. “

At Toledo, Ely will work under Head Coach Matt Campbell and offensive coordinator Coach Jason Candle. Looking ahead to his first year of eligibility None of the quarterbacks the Rockets used last season will still be on the team in 2014.

Coming into the spring, there was plenty of discussion about the depth at running back for the Crimson Tide, but it was the quarterback position that dwarfed the backs numbers wise.
