BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A giant asteroid about the size of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs passed within 3.6 million miles of the Earth on Friday.

NASA scientists are getting a rare look at the asteroid, and they say it’s 1.7 miles wide – or nine times larger than the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth 2.

Experts hope information from the 1998 QE2 will help build future defenses against asteroid strikes.

The asteroid is only visible with a powerful telescope, but amateur astronomers can get a better view of it during the first week of June.
