(WIAT) – A combination of basketball and bibles is bringing inner city kids together.
One Birmingham church is hosting a basketball camp Saturday, where the main goal is to send home scripture.
CBS 42’s Melissa Crabtree tells us how social media helped make it happen.
Thanks to a simple prayer request on Al Blanton’s personal Facebook page 15-hundred kids will get their own bible while enjoying a day of basketball.
Blanton says, “We want to get bibles in the hands of kids that maybe have never had a bible, couldn’t afford a bible and so that’s the main purpose of this event ”
Blanton says within minutes of the request, he got a link which offered bibles for one dollar and then a friend donated the entire 15-hundred dollars he needed to buy them.
New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church’s “Ball 4 the Gospel” basketball event will include former NBA players on the court, a devotional and lots of giveaways.
Along with 15-hundred free bibles, the church is giving away, 1,500 basketballs, 400 basketball goals and 1,500 dollars.
Blanton says he hopes kids leave the event with a bible, a basketball and a budding passion for the gospel.
The event starts at 2 p-m. at Huffman High School in Birmgingham.
