(WIAT) — Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Champions Tour golfer Tom Lehman toured the new Russell facility at Children’s of Alabama just one day before the start of the Regions Tradition.

Rice is serving as the honorary chairperson for the Regions Tradition, which will run Wednesday through Sunday at Shoal Creek.

Rice and Lehman visited patients and even stopped to do a science experiment with students in the Sunshine school, an educational program for long term patients.

“This is a marvelous facility that’s helping these children get through the greatest of challenges, helping families to be apart of their care, it’s really just tremendously heart warming to see what’s going on here, said Rice

Children’s of Alabama is a primary beneficiary of the Regions Tradition

Tom Lehman has won the past two Regions Tradition and says touring the hospital really puts everything the tournament does into perspective.

“I think everybody should do it, I think everybody should come here just to understand fully what goes on behind the scenes. When we leave on Sunday night, what happens here, the rest of the year is a big part of it the funds that are raised through the tournament and you realize all the good it’s doing.”

Since the start if the Regions Tradition $500,000 has been raised for Children’s of Alabama.
