Homicide investigation launched after overnight shooting

(WIAT) — Birmingham Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was shot and killed on Leaf Lake Boulevard around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

38-year-old Manquel Mertez Whittsett was shot and taken to UAB Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead.

Officers from the Birmingham Police Department responded to a report of a person shot around 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

When they arrived they found Whittsett lying on the ground suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

No arrests have been made in the case.
