(WIAT) — June is Railroad Safety Awareness Month and hundreds turned out for Railroad Safety Day at Calera’s Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum on Thursday.
There were several games and activities in addition to lessons about safety along the tracks.
Organizers not only want to encourage adults to stop at railroad crossings, they also focused on children not using the tracks as a playground.
“They cannot walk up and down tracks and play around the tracks, because it is so dangerous,” Nancy Hudson said.
Operation Lifesaver, the organization that conducted the event, has three other events scheduled around the state.
