(WIAT) — UPDATE: According to the Fairfield Police Department, the shooting took place a little after 12 p.m. on Friday.
The five-year-old was being watched by its grandmother. At some point, the grandmother stepped out of the room.
While the grandmother was away, the child ventured into the grandparents’ bedroom and found a gun that was hidden in a drawer.
Police say the child was trying to load a bullet into the barrel of the gun when it discharged.
The child lost a finger in the incident but is otherwise fine.
ORIGINAL: Fairfield Police confirmed that a five-year-old was shot on Friday afternoon.
The shooting occurred just after 1 p.m. on Friday on the 4900 Block of Lloyd Noland Parkway.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, the gunshot wound is believed to be self-inflicted.
