BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from Alabama Power, saying your service will be disconnected unless you provide them with money cards or other forms of payment, hang up the phone.
Thieves are targeting people around the state, most recently in Jasper, posing as representatives with Alabama Power.
The caller says that if you don’t buy a pre-paid money card and call back with the number, they will shut off power immediately.
The caller also urges people who pick up the phone to provide them with credit card or banking information.
Alabama Power never demands immediate payments or asks for credit card or bank account numbers.
Anyone with questions can 1-800-254-2244.
