(WIAT) — A student at a private high school in South Alabama walked across the stage at her graduation, but she ended up walking away empty handed.

The graduate, Chelsey Ramer, is a Poarch Creek Native American.

Her tribal teacher honored her with a feather for the event.

However, her headmistress at Escambia Academy Private School would not give her permission to wear it during graduation.

Only a short time later, students at the school were told to sign a contract in order to walk during the commencement ceremony.

The contract spelled out what could and could not be worn for graduation, in addition to behavior guidelines.

Ramer didn’t sign it.

She walked during the ceremony, with her feather attached to her tassel, but she didn’t receive her diploma.

Now, if she wants to receive the diploma and her transcripts, the school says she has to pay $1,000.

The headmistress Ramer talked to no longer works at the school.

Escambia Academy High School has not commented on the issue.

Ramer is in the process of discussing the ordeal with attorneys to determine what the next step should be.
