Frost Bite: South African leads after 3rd round at Regions Tradition

SHOAL CREEK, Ala. (WIAT)- You’ve heard the saying two’s company, and three’s a crowd; well, the field at the Regions Tradition on Saturday tried to take it a step further.  At one point, four golfers were tied atop the leader board in the third round.  “This is  a fun golf course to play,” said Michael Allen, currently tied for third with a -10.  “It’d be a fun tournament to win.”

Organizers at the tournament believe they had a record-breaking crowd Saturday.  Fred Couples could’ve broken the record by himself.  A huge gallery followed the Hall-of-Famer, as he swung his way to a second place stake.  According to Couples, he played exceptionally well on the par-5 holes, including a birdie on six.  “And the other fourteen holes [besides the four par-5’s] I played really well.  I’d like to say I didn’t get myself in too much trouble, because when I drove it in the rough, I judged my second shots pretty well out of the rough today.”

Going back to our original analogy, there’s a crowd in the third place position.  Morris Hatalsky, Michael Allen, and Duffy Waldorf are all tied at -10.  “It was a great day for me.  I hit the ball reasonably well.  Not as good as yesterday, but it was good,” said Hatalsky.  “I made my share of putts today.”

If one is the loneliest number, then David Frost is pretty lonely.  He’s sitting alone atop the leader board at -12, partially due to aggressive play on the 17th hole.  Frost elected to go for the green instead of laying up on his second shot.  He made it, and two-putted his way to a birdie.  “Overall, [I’m] very happy with my round.  I didn’t use all my putts up today, so there’s some in the bag for tomorrow.”

Due to the threat of severe weather, the final round will have dual tee-offs at the 1st and 10th holes.  Golfers will take the course starting at 7:30am.  Organizers believe action will be finished by 2:30.
