(WIAT) — There was standing room only in a community meeting Monday night at Emmet O’Neal Library in Mountain Brook, to discuss how residents can keep the Crestline Piggly Wiggly open.

After rumors of the potential closure of the store were confirmed, residents began efforts to spread the word and fight to keep the store open.

Whether the name was Piggly Wiggly at the time, or it went by another name,  many in the Crestline community have been using the grocery store for decades.

Mary Donworthy, lives within walking distance and says she has been a patron of the store for about 30 years.

With leasing negotiations between the store owners and those who own the building underway, residents are concerned a national drug store chain could replace their neighborhood grocery store.

Just 3 days after it was created, the “Save the Crestline Pig” Facebook page reached nearly 4,000 “likes.”

That is a real indication of the vibrancy of this community, the importance of that particular store,” said Kathryn Corey, one of many residents behind the movement to keep it open.

“People have even been willing to say that if in fact, the grocery store gets kind of gobbled up by this big box, potential drug store that we will exercise our rights as consumers and we will not patronize that drug store,” she adds.

According to Mountain Brook city manager Sam Gaston, as of Monday afternoon, an agreement between the store owners and the property owner had not been reached.
