(WIAT) — On Wednesday afternoon, firefighters from multiple departments across the Birmingham area responded to a fire at Woodmere Creek Apartments in Vestavia.

Eight to ten units were badly damaged, but everyone was evacuated safely.

The Hoover Fire Department was called in to assist Vestavia Hills with the blaze. Witnesses say they could see a small amount of flames coming from the building when it first began but the fire quickly spread and grew larger within 20 to 30 minutes.

The Red Cross was called in to assist those displaced as a result.
